Think for a minute what it would be like if search engines
did not exist. People could still use the Internet, of course. But how could
you get to the webpage you wanted? Try, for example, to find information about
the latest exhibit at the British Museum without using any search tools of
any kind (including internal search engines for specific web pages ). Did you
use a URL address you had memorized? Did you use any hyperlinks? Currently,
the World Wide Web is made up of billions of web pages and that number increases
everyday. If we had no tools that allowed us to sort through this vast numbers
of documents, how probable is it that you would be able to use your above methods
to find everything you need on the World Wide Web?
